Shaka iLembe shook things up on the television front, drawing praise every Sunday when an episode airs.
Among the praises sung for the show on Mzansi Magic is that it brought to the fore a stellar cast. One cast member is Mimi Mahlasela, who is well known for her role as Aggie on 7de Laan.
The historical series, set in the late 1700s and 1800s, explores the rise of iconic African king Shaka Zulu, played by Lemogang Tsipa, and Nomzamo Mbatha as iNdlovukazi Nandi.
The actress who stars as Langeni Elder Aunt told TshisaLIVE she was filled with gratitude to star in such a big production.
“We shot this last year and I was between sets. It was amazing. I'm grateful for the opportunity Bomb gave me. It was taxing emotionally, mentally and physically because I was in two different cities. I'm here speaking Afrikaans and there speaking isiZulu, but I'm grateful. It was an amazing experience, a beautiful production, an amazing stellar cast and the crew was just exceptional,” she said.
Mimi recently shared a clip of the cast walking on a mountain in KwaZulu-Natal, and shared how she was emotional because she has a fear of heights.
“We shot this scene on the coldest day in KwaZulu-Natal, Nkandla into engayi khala before shooting this scene because of my acrophobia but we did it and I faced my fear.
“My journey with this project was not only about the work, it was far greater. I finally got to work with the remarkable Bomb Productions,” she said.
In its first episode the show drew more than 3.6-million DStv viewers in South Africa. The show also reached No 1 on the DStv app in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and other African countries.
Reflecting on her success as an actress who has starred in big productions Mimi summed up her journey as amazing.
“I think it is guided by a lot of prayer and the ancestors. From varsity to 7de Laan, and while there I ventured on to do other things including theatre, Shaka iLembe and lots of other things and my confidence as a plus size woman. It has been amazing.”
