The DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival is just around the corner and soul funk group Shalamar will be bringing the heat on stage with their fiery performance.
The trio Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewitt and Carolyn Griffey are billed to perform on September 24 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg.
The two-day festival, famous for its culinary excellence and captivating performances, marks its 10th anniversary this year. The organisers have promised an unforgettable musical experience.
Speaking to TshisaLIVE Jeffrey said coming to Mzansi is a way of cementing a celebration of their 40th anniversary tour that kicked of on June 2 at the London Palladium.
“This is my dream trip, I've been wanting to come to South Africa for years. I hate to toot my horn, but we are coming there on a mission with a vengeance. I will tell you why. Shalamar are now considered one of the premium performing groups from the 80s where you get the choreography, costumes, we've got the band and arrangements and we are blessed to have a legacy of hits,
“That's what we are doing, we are celebrating and this is the 40th anniversary of the release of the Friends album. There is so much in the Shalamar show as far as the choreography [is concerned], and there's feel-good music,” said Jeffrey.
Jeffrey said it's a celebration of the group's hits.
“We had a period of separation when we broke up around the 80s but when we did the collaboration with Baby Face and LL Cool J, we did a cover of Shalamar's For the Love in You and that was importance for Howard and I thinking about coming together and doing this again, that was in '96. From that time on Howard and I have been together,
“We started performing again but Jody (Watley) decided she didn't want to reform with us, so it was Howard and myself and it felt unnatural without that female presence there because you we do lead vocals with a female, we brought on Carolyn Griffey who is the daughter of Carrie Lucas and SOLAR Records boss Dick Griffey. She was family, she's always been there all along. We've been performing with her for 23 years, it's amazing. It's a celebration of the legacy of the Shalamar hits.
Also in Sunday's line-up are gospel choir Joyous Celebration, Greg The Musical Maestro and Oskido, who will be on the decks throughout the day to keep patrons moving and grooving. Wrapping up the day are British acid jazz act Incognito, and Maxwell.
