Sikhumbuzo “Midnight Uzo” Mazibuko shared insights into being a young musician and entrepreneur in South Africa.

Since launching her music career earlier this year after graduating from Stellenbosch University, Midnight Uzo, Bathabile Dlamini's daughter, started a record label, Kahle Records, to protect her music as a new and independent artist.

“Besides being owned and used by me for my works, I hope to offer a service that will work with and support women in the arts sector in distributing their work and creating a safe space for them to work. I hope to sign and nurture other musical talents in the future,” she told TshisaLIVE.

The musician said she finds intense comfort in music.

“I am interested in the arts in general as I believe it’s a powerful tool in building community. And I always associate the community with support and growth. So it’s creating comfort for myself and others. All in all, it’s also great fun.”

Midnight Uzo said having discussions on the arts, especially for women, is imperative because women get to speak about what happens behind the scenes in the entertainment industry honestly and openly.

“These talks also mean to help people from different backgrounds find common ground on a number of issues and see ways we are able to assist each other as well as add to each other’s works through collaboration.”

Midnight Uzo said it is vital for artists to open their own lanes, as that allows them to do a lot of groundwork and understand the music industry better.

“You open your own lane automatically when you step into the arts — I think because you are your own business. The work you produce and the feedback you get is all directly from you and other interactions and comments are directed towards you specifically.”
