Vegans are not nutty freaks

Andrea Burgener's "Bread and Butter" column ("Invisibility", 17 June 2015) refers. I applaud her for making visible a small part of the dark underbelly of the food chain. However, there was one aspect of the article that got my goat. She writes: "Even quite conscious eaters - bar those in the vegan lunatic fringe who refuse to kill head lice - often don't think about animal issues outside the food chain."The article seeks to raise awareness of animal issues, but deprecates the very people who make animal issues central to their culinary choices.I understand the author was probably resorting to hyperbole for effect. However, I object tothe anachronistic but widespread notion that all vegans are woo-woo-tree-hugging-off-the-grid-don't-step-on-the-bugs lunatics. It's a minor infringement, in the overall context of an excellent article, but I feel compelled to place on record that there are vegans who choose veganism because it is a reasonable and sustainable approach given the enormous challenges facing our planet. ..
