Bongmusa Mthembu earned not a cent for his role in South Africa winning the team gold at the world 100km championship in Spain at the weekend, but he still rated the feat higher than winning the Comrades. He and two fellow Comrades champions - Gift Kelehe and reigning king David Gatebe - secured victory with a combined time of 19hr 51min 40sec, just four minutes and four seconds ahead of Japan.Mthembu was second in the individual race, Kelehe ninth and Gatebe 12th."It's almost the same [as the Comrades]," Mthembu said on his return to Johannesburg yesterday morning. "But remember this is the world championships."Coach John Hamlett pointed out the motivation was not financial."This is about your country," the coach said.Mthembu, used to running up and down hills, complained about the pancake course, run over 10 10km laps in the rain."The course was flat, flat, flat," said the 2014 Comrades champion, who trained with Kelehe and Gatebe at altitude in Dullstroom."Flat running is a very difficult thing. You have to change your pace frequently," explained Hamlett."Tactically we could have done better, but physically, nobody held back. The guys went to war."..
