Two people were killed when a gyrocopter crashed near the Uitenhage airport on Wednesday afternoon, paramedics said.

The aircraft crashed into dense bush and burst into flames around 1pm, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found firefighters fighting the blaze.

"Tragically, the two people in the gyrocopter had died due to the extensive injuries that they sustained," Botha said.

The cause of the crash was not known and would be a subject for aviation investigation.
