The ''party district" of St Pauli in Hamburg, Germany, is discouraging public urination by covering walls in paint that ''pees back."

The Local, an online German news site, reported that a community group in the town had released a YouTube video explaining that the most frequently soiled walls in the district were being covered in a super-hydrophobic paint.

This paint causes sprayed liquid [urine] to bounce back at the offenders who will get a taste of their own medicine when the ''pee back" sprays on to their pants and shoes.

The walls that are treated with the paint are also labelled with the warning signs that reading, ''Don't pee here! We'll pee back!"

Bar owner Uwe Christiansen and a member of the St Pauli Interest Community board said: ''It was a real annoyance that was growing and growing," he told The Local.

The bold move is being hailed by locals, who were similarly tired of dealing with public urination, as a grand idea.

''I've seen in Facebook and the local newspapers that the reactions were very positive. People were just tired of the peeing on walls, home entrances and playgrounds," Christiansen said.
