The silver mirage of the sardine run hit Isipingo‚ about 17km south of Durban‚ as scattered shoals move up the KwaZulu-Natal coastline on Thursday.

KZN Sharks Board spokesperson Mike Anderson-Reid said that teaming nets had been pulled ashore at Isipingo early in the morning.

“They are currently netting at Isipingo and apparently there were three nets in the water‚” he said.

Anderson-Reid‚ who had flown over the shoals on Thursday morning‚ said that small pockets of fish were scattered between Isipingo and Umgababa‚ a little further south.

“There is a bit of activity around but it is difficult to say whether it will continue. We have cold weather coming tonight and the wind specifically could drive them off the coast or push them toward Durban beachfront‚” Anderson-Reid added.

He said that‚ hopefully‚ it would be the start of better things to come.
