It has no engine and the presenters of Top Gear will no doubt scoff at its wooden frame - but local "supercar makers" are convinced they have designed the next big thing in exotic cars.

Called the Tahaka Awe2, a team of 20 car makers from Ubuhle Park in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, have come up with an initial design of what they hope will eventually take on Ferrari and Lamborghini.

But first, they have to find cash for an engine.

Samora Malamule, the man behind the ambitious project, said his team of artists, designers, mechanics and technicians have been working on the car for four years. The 3.9 x 2m low-profile car is built on a VW Beetle suspension. It has a wooden frame and a body made of fibre glass and metal sheets.

Working on a shoestring budget, the designers installed two seats made of hard board to resemble black and beige leather seats. The car boasts 17-inch tyres.

On June 16, Malamule and his team put their car on a trailer and paraded it around the township.

"We are now fighting to get financial support so that we can build a prototype ... to showcase it on June 16 next year," Malamule said.

The proud makers of the Tahaka Awe2 hope one day their "supercar" will catch the attention of the likes of billionaire Patrice Motsepe.
