Rhino horn‚ ivory balls and lion's tooth found in 'suspicious' Cape Town car

A rhino horn was discovered by chance when police pulled over a car at a Cape Town shopping centre on Wednesday.

Ten balls of ivory and a lion’s tooth were also found when officers from Kuils River police station pulled over a “suspicious” silver Mazda with tinted windows at Zevenwacht Mall.

The three men in the car — a Zambian and two men from the Democratic Republic of Congo‚ aged 27‚ 32 and 25 — were arrested.

“The case is under investigation by the Kuils River stock theft and endangered species unit‚” said police spokesman FC van Wyk.

“The suspects will appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges related to the possession of suspected rhino horn and ivory.”
