Spokesperson of the African National Congress Women League (ANCWL) Edna Molewa says her party is ‘shocked and saddened’ by the passing on of ANC struggle stalwart Cheryl Gillwald at the weekend. 53-year-old Gillwald died of a cancer related syndrome.
"The ANCWL national executive committee is shocked and saddened by the news of the passing on of Mrs Cheryl Gillwald, the heroine of our struggle for liberation," Molewa said.
Molowa also said her party joins hands with millions of South African people in paying tribute to this brave woman of this country who has truly played a “noble and prominent role in our people's struggle for freedom."
Gillwald served as a Member of Parliament for 12 years, from 1994 to 2006. She was appointed deputy justice and constitutional development minister in 1999, and in 2004 she became deputy correctional services minister.
"The ANCWL acknowledges Gillwald's tireless efforts towards human rights and creating a better life for all - a vision she lived throughout her life," said Molewa.
Cheryl Gillwald resigned from public office in 2006.
