Traffic in Johannesburg was being diverted for the 94.7 Cycling Challenge which started in Woodmead on Sunday morning, metro police said.

Roads which were affected included the M1 south, M2 east, Jan Smuts Avenue, the N14, Malibongwe Drive and the R55, said JMPD chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"Motorists can use the N1 freeway, the N3, Rivonia Road and William Nicol Drive as alternative routes," he said.

The race ends at 4pm.

The M1 would be reopened around 2pm while the other roads would remain closed until 6pm.
