Former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Vincent Mdunge will stand trial in the Durban Regional Court in March.

Mdunge is accused of fraudulently presenting a fake matric certificate when he joined the police in 1987.

He resigned after the allegation surfaced in September, and was arrested in October.

At the time, The Mercury newspaper reported that the State was still trying to determine the value of the alleged fraud. The court has given it until Friday to finalise an audit.

According to the newspaper, the amount could run into millions, if it was found Mdunge should not have been employed in the first place, and allowances, housing subsidies, and other benefits were taken into account.

A police colonel earns between R500,000 and R600,000 a year.
