A memorial lecture for one of the founders of the United Democratic Front and sponsored by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Agriculture yesterday saw the department hand out T-shirts that resembled those of the ANC.

In October, the DA complained about the design of the Fetsa Tlala campaign T-shirts, the department's latest anti-hunger campaign for its eerie resemblance to ANC T-shirts.

But acting deputy director-general for Fisheries Desmond Stevens denied it was using the Johnny Issel memorial lecture to promote the ANC ahead of the elections.

Issel, who along with Trevor Manuel and several others founded the UDF in Mitchells Plain, died in January 2011.

Inside the Swartklip Sports Centre, where the lecture was held, ANC supporters were handed yellow T-shirts with President Jacob Zuma's face emblazoned on the front with the ANC flag as a background.

But Stevens, who is also the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association treasurer-general, and oversaw the allocation of line fishing rights, denied they were in ANC colours.
