The death of former minister of correctional services and IFP stalwart Ben Skosana was mourned across party lines yesterday.

He died suddenly in a Cape Town restaurant on Wednesday night. He was 66 years old.

Skosana was having dinner with Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi at the time.

For thepast seven years Skosana was chairman of the National Assembly, the only non-ANC member to ever hold this position.

This crowned a 39-year-long political career, all of it as an IFP member.

Skosana, who was born in Sharpeville in the Vaal Triangle, joined the IFP in 1975.

He was elected to parliament in 1994 and was minister of correctional services from 1998 to 2004.

Yesterday, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said: "He served his nation with dedication, integrity and skill."
