A couple of drinks make for funnier jokes, new research has shown.

Twelve wits were asked to tell jokes while drinking, with their imbibing charted from "sober" to "s*** faced".

The jokes were rated by those who told them and by an online panel of sober judges.

The researchers discovered that there is a "sweet spot" - two or three drinks makes one funnier.

After that, the jokes start to fall flat.

According to Atlantic magazine, the evening of research culminated in a joke involving a Venn diagram, a pimple and cancer. The gag-teller rated it "hilarious" but the panel was appalled.

Moral of the story? Make sure nobody remains sober. Nobody.
