ALL SORTS: Arcade Empire in Pretoria attracts various subcultures under 30-ish

Arcade Empire is a raw, no-frills bar off Lynnwood Road, Pretoria. A favourite among young party people of every sort, it strikes an effortless balance between all subcultures- provided they share an interest in drinking.

There is ample secure parking. There are also well shadowed corners available, should one feel the need for a quiet outdoor power nap. The front veranda is popular for an afternoon rendezvous, when there is usually a DJ lurking about.

The entrance hall features a decorative rock formation that I have often felt a stinging desire to climb - luckily I've never stayed in Arcade late enough for such shenanigans. There is a bar and a DJ booth in the adjoining room. It tends to get rather packed as the evening wears on, but those inclined to dance will find their slot.

The lounge is next to a games area with arcade games, pool and foosball tables. Smoke clings thickly to the high ceiling and musicians grace the small stage, while the cool kids congregate on the couches. Pub food is available and those in the know recommend the boerewors rolls.

One of the best kept secrets of this bare-knuckles bar is the gig schedule. Should one wander into Arcade on any given evening, there is an excellent chance of being met with some of the best live music South Africa has to offer. aKing and Blazin' Gooch are performing on Friday.

The band hall is huge with yet another bar, a large stage and relatively benign bathrooms. The sound quality is great and the lineup is consistently excellent.
