Controversial ANC bigwig Tony Yengeni has hired a forensic expert to try to poke holes in the accuracy of the equipment used by the state to apprehend drunk drivers.

Yengeni, an ANC NEC member and former chief whip, was arrested in Cape Town in August last year when he was spotted allegedly driving his luxury Maserati unsteadily.

At the time, city councillor JP Smith said Yengeni was found to be substantially over the blood-alcohol level of 0.05% and a blood sample was taken, which was sent for laboratory testing.

Yengeni appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court yesterday. His lawyer, Waheed Badroodien, told the court that he had hired a forensic expert to analyse the data that the state intended to use in its case.

Badroodien said Yengeni would attach the forensic expert's report to his representations to the national director of public prosecutions in a bid to have his charges dropped.

The court postponed the matter to September 5 and Yengeni's R500 bail was extended.
