Imagine if women around the world downed their grooming tools and went on a beauty strike, refusing to shave again? Would we survive in a world of bushy armpits and unlipsticked lips?

Hairy leg movements have sparked debates on social media. Some people see them as a legitimate protest, but others think they make a mockery of women.

The trend gained popularity after Breanne Fahs, associate professor of women and gender studies at Arizona State University, challenged women in her course to stay unshaven for 10 weeks to get an extra credit.

Male students were encouraged to shave all their body hair for the same amount of time. Fahs told the university newspaper that she wanted them to learn about norms in society and question them.

Hairy pictures posted on Tumblr, prompted a Twitter explosion. "This is so wrong . They're against non-essential grooming but they all paint their toenails," said @TheLuluLife.

Tay ?@_adixtion said: ''Not shaving is the most disgusting thing in the world. how do u even feel comfortable with yourself?"

Celebrities have also been known to show off their pit hairs. A few months ago Madonna showed off her underarm hair patch on Instagram with the caption: ''Long hair...... Don't Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove".

Who could forget the iconic picture of Julia Roberts at the premier of Notting Hill, when she proudly lifted up her arm to wave, lo and behold, a fuzzball appeared under her arm.

Wits University research associate Lisa Vetten said women not shaving is a legitimate protest and might be useful in generating a conversation about why ''women's looks are so policed".
