When most of us experience poor service at a restaurant, we walk out in a bad mood and without leaving a tip.

Instead of getting angry, an American couple who had a "terrible" meal left their waiter a $100 tip as a way of "paying it forward".

Makenzie Schultz and her husband, Steven, said the service they received at a restaurant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, "sucked".

She wrote on Facebook that they had waited 20 minutes for water, 40 minutes for an appetiser and more than an hour for their starter.

The pair - both of whom had been waiters - felt pity for their waiter, who was "running around like crazy and never acted annoyed with any table", though he had 12 tables to look after.

More than 1.5million people have read her post.
