Firebrand activist Andile Lili, who dumped faeces on the steps of the Western Cape provincial legislature last year, fought back during an attack outside his home last week.

His wife Ntombikayise Pike-Lili said she heard him screaming after four shots were fired at him outside their home in Makhaza in Cape Town on Wednesday night.

Lili was in a stable condition at the Tygerberg Hospital last night. His supporters believe the attempt on his life was a political hit linked to factions within the ANC.

"After he was shot, I heard him shouting jou moer. Then I came out. I thought they missed him," she said.

Lili, co-founder of NGO Ses'Khona People's Rights Movement, was expelled from the ANC this year following the protests.
