An EFF vote is a death wish

Your correspondent Anondoc (Letters, yesterday) urged voters to switch their allegiance from the ANC to the EFF "to shake up moribund local government structures".

This is a ridiculous proposal that will propel us out of the frying pan and into the fire.

It appears the black majority has a death wish, a mindset that became evident in KwaZulu-Natal's Mpofana (Mooi River) municipality, where rampaging protesters burnt down the library and blockaded the N3 highway because the dysfunctional ANC-majority council was incapable of service delivery.

The council was dissolved, the municipality placed under administration and a by-election held last month.

Before the election, the deterioration of municipal structures was tragically highlighted by the lone DA councillor, Ken Denysschen, who himself became a victim of the incompetence when he was electrocuted by a loose cable while putting up an election poster.

Despite being offered a great opportunity to replace non-performing ANC councillors, Mpofana's voters returned them to power.

The poll result suggests that black voters will continue to marginalise other race groups, particularly whites, who in 1994 supported the concept of one-man, one-vote and were eager to co-operate in establishing the multi-racial government envisaged by Nelson Mandela.

Our only hope of avoiding an inevitable armageddon under the ANC is for voters to switch their allegiance to the one surviving multiracial party, the DA, which has proved in Western Cape that it can competently govern South Africa. -
