Western Cape denies MEC's arrest

The Western Cape provincial government on Tuesday denied that one of its MECs had been arrested for speeding along the N1 South in Midrand.

Western Cape Transport MEC Donald Grant said there was "absolutely no truth" to the reports.

Johannesburg metro police said the man was caught driving at 207km/h in a 120km/h zone in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The fact of the matter is, the man arrested claimed to be an MEC of the Western Cape," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

The man had failed to stop for the metro police officers who had to chase him and cut him off in his gold Bentley on Corlett Drive, Minnaar said.

He was arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving and later released on R1500 bail.

The man was scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
