South African franchises and the Springboks appear to be pulling in the same direction in World Cup year with a deal to rest key players during the Super rugby season.

No specifics were given, or an explanation of who would decide to rest them, although that decision is likely to sit with the franchise coaches. But at least there is public acknowledgement that vital players will need better game management.

The players who will benefit most are the 20 contracted Springboks. The agreement with the SA Rugby Union states that no nominated player will play for more than five consecutive weeks.

Stats have shown that the injury risk rises by 60% to 70% when players are used for more than five consecutive weeks.

"The franchises have really bought in to our vision to help with player management this season, and we're grateful for that," said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

The managing of game time will exclude matches in the Super rugby finals series (play-offs, semifinals and final), as well as the bye weeks. This will also apply to players returning from injury.

Despite this, it's still a long way from the perfect situation, in whichplayers could be pulled out of Super rugby for six consecutive weeks, as has happened in New Zealand.

"We are extremely grateful to the Super rugby franchises for agreeing to assist in ensuring our key players' game time is managed in the build-up to the Rugby World Cup," said Saru chief executive Jurie Roux.

"It's wonderful to know we have the support and co-operation of the franchises as the Springboks prepare for the Rugby World Cup.

"We're confident that our franchises can set the tone by being competitive as the players aim to impress the selectors."

The Boks' warm-up match against a World XV has been moved to July 11 - a week after the Super rugby final and a week before their Rugby Championship opener against Australia in Brisbane.
