A six-year-old boy was critically injured when he fell two storeys at a school in Tongaat, near Durban, on Monday morning, KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services (EMS) said.

"Paramedics from a private ambulance service initially responded and, realising the critical condition the child was in, requested the assistance of the department of health's EMS helicopter," spokesman Robert Mckenzie said.

The child was airlifted to King Edward VIII hospital in Durban, where he was being cared for by the trauma team.

"The circumstances resulting in the child falling are unknown at this stage and are being investigated."
