Sibanye miners arrested for attempted murder and assault

Eleven Sibanye Gold employees face criminal charges following inter-union conflict at the Beatrix mine in Westonaria, Gauteng, the company said.

"The [SA Police Service] is charging six of the employees with attempted murder and five with assault with the intent of grievous bodily harm," it said in a statement.

A police spokesman could not immediately confirm the latest developments related to the conflict on February 5, but Sibanye said it followed a joint investigation by police and Sibanye Gold protection services.

Sibanye suspended operations during the conflict until there was a commitment from unions that members stop any further violence and co-operate with the investigation. Work resumed on February 9.

Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman said: "It is regrettable that this inter-union rivalry has resulted in criminal charges being brought against some of our employees.

"Sibanye respects the rule of law and, as agreed with the unions, will allow the law to take its course."

He said Sibanye would have to consider legal recourse regarding the lost production.

"We trust that the outcome of the investigation will be respected by the unions and that we will be able to continue to operate in a peaceful environment where mutual respect is shown by all stakeholders."

Earlier media reports said the rivalry was between the National Union of Mineworkers and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union.

Rivalry between the two was a common thread during a prolonged strike in the platinum belt in 2012.
