Thirty-six people arrested during a protest in Thembelihle near Lenasia in Johannesburg will appear in court on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

"They will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court today [Thursday] on a charge of public violence," said Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

He said no incidents were reported in Tembisa, Thembelihle, and Jeppestown following protests there on Wednesday.

"The situation is calm in all areas."

He said a man arrested in Tembisa was also expected to appear in court on Thursday.

A clinic was burnt down and shops looted during a protest in Winnie Mandela on Tuesday night after illegally connected electricity was cut off.

The 22 arrested in Jeppestown were expected to appear in court on Friday.
