Restaurant Review: Bunfight on the 4th Avenue

08 April 2015 - 02:26 By TJ Strydom

Hudson's is locked and loaded for a showdown on the mean streets of Parkhurst, Johannesburg. The burger joint has taken a stance on the furthest edge of 4th Avenue.Of course you know that there are a few joints that go by the same name in Cape Town and that Parkhurst was the first to don the hat in the north. And isn't it cowboy-esque to start flipping patties on the same street as The Wolfpack, another burger joint of high repute down the drag?If you want to sit inside, pick one of the booths. It's cosy and great for leaning into conversations. Outside is better if you want to sit back and chat. This place is all about the hamburgers, which it serves up in a way that reminds you vaguely of the date scene in Pulp Fiction. At the risk of sounding like an old man... the music gets loud inside. The waiters are quirky, but their service is not bad.The genius of Hudson's is that you can buy your burger in two different sizes. It's nothing like the Spur-ious exercise of adding an extra patty. This place has the meat-to-bun ratio spot-on. And the toppings are as good as Wolfpack's any day.But is the town big enough for the both of them? The LowdownWhat to eat: The Wiseguy. It's a beef burger topped with tomato relish, jalapenos and rocket. Fresh and spicy. Have it with "disco fries", super-thin and salty. When to go: Just after sunset.Who to take: A few mates keen on burgers. What not to do: Chance it at weekends without booking. You'll queue à la elections. What to drink: Craft beer.Whatever you do: Don't sit inside if you want a quiet chat. The music will overpower you.How much: A burger costs about R75, but you order sides separately so take at least another R25 for fries.Corner 4th Avenue and 14th Street, Parkhurst, Johannesburg, 011-268-0713..
