Letter: Steer your own twilight ship

08 June 2015 - 09:18 By Sandra Zach

The reality of getting older, when the highlight of your day is feeding the pigeons in your back yard, is sad but true (''For many, old age has nothing to recommend it", Friday). At a wealth summit I attended last year, I learnt that only 2% of South Africans are ready for their retirement. In a conference room of 150 people, only three women raised their hands to indicate they were financially independent of their spouses.Unfortunately, the majority of people believe there is still plenty of time to prepare.Generations before and after World War 2 were focused on having families, finding a decent job, putting food on the table and ensuring a roof over their heads. The kinds of opportunities we have today were at a minimum . There was no time for a real social life, to play a sport or to participate in anything cultural. It was all about making ends meet .We cannot blame any government for a lack of personal fortitude aimed at improving ourselves and making a difference in our own lives.Getting older is not just about preparing financially, nor is it about repeating the cycle of your earlier life. It is about your own wellness, getting involved, pursuing interests and using your time to give back. Most certainly, more can be done to increase government pensions. Instead of enforcing e-tolls, let those bright sparks come up with a plan for the unprepared and previously disadvantaged. - Sandra Zach, via e-mail..
