ANC is cutting out rot, but more serious surgery is required

Is it a question of too little too late or should we applaud the ANC for finally taking action against those who fail to serve our people? In the space of a week, the party has removed three mayors and a number of senior officials who have failed to deliver quality services to their communities.Though each case is different, the common threads running through them are arrogance, entitlement and disregard for rules and regulations. In the Eastern Cape, the party finally acted against the Buffalo City mayor and her deputy, who face fraud and money-laundering charges related to the misuse of cash meant to be used to transport mourners to Nelson Mandela's funeral.A statement released by the party over the weekend said: "If the current situation continues unabated, then it would have made it difficult for the municipality to accomplish targets set in our local government elections manifesto."Buffalo City is but one of many municipalities in which the ANC needs to act with speed if it is to arrest the decline in service delivery. With just months before local government elections, the electorate will again have to decide who runs their administrations. With pressure building in communities, and an increase in service delivery protests across the country, we can only hope that those who stand for positions realise that party membership and connections to high office are no longer a blank cheque. The changes we see are a sign of growing concerns at Luthuli House that "our people" are demanding change. We are told that the ANC will make further changes and remove dead wood as it prepares for a tough election fight. With opposition parties sharpening their knives, hoping to slash ANC dominance in a number of metros, the public can only hope the winners will appreciate their voters...
