SANParks officials have turned to using bait and are literally cat-calling in their efforts to capture a lion that escaped from the Karoo National Park two weeks ago.
Since Tuesday night a team has been stationed at the foot of the Nuweveld Mountains in the Western Cape, 60km west of the wildlife reserve the animal escaped from.
Trackers are now trying to lure the animal in by using meat from a red hartebeest.
SANParks spokesman Fayroush Ludick said the team was also making use of lion callers, who play sounds that attract lions, to coax the animal.
"The lion was last spotted in the mountains on Sunday morning so we think it is close by," said Ludick.
The 3½-year-old male escaped through a hole in a fence in the reserve, believed to have been caused by floods.
