Pietersen: 'Rebuild it and wins will come'

09 September 2015 - 02:17 By Khanyiso Tshwaku

Sharks utility back Joe Pietersen knows just how tough it is to be in a team that is "rebuilding". In his formative years, Pietersen played for Western Province during its tumultuous mid-2000s period under Kobus van der Merwe. The Sharks are not in as dire a spot as Western Province were then, but they are struggling to find their feet in the Currie Cup - and Pietersen understands his role as a senior player in getting the team to pull through the teething problems."When you're in a team that's in a rebuilding phase - though I hate saying that because it sounds like an excuse when things aren't going well - you know there is a process that one is working towards. We're still in fourth place, so we can still build on that. We're not totally out of the running."I'm not the biggest talker, so I try my best to let my actions do all the talking."I just hope I will be able to ignite a little bit of a fire every now and then."The boys have to realise that when you just play and don't focus on the other things, things do tend to go well."The Sharks have not been worth writing home about, but they have consecutive wins under their belts.Pietersen is looking forward to the weekend's joust against WP at King's Park."It will be a lekker thing to play against them. They are a very good defensive unit, so we know we'll be up for a very good game."..
