'Sjambok' navy pair in custody

Two members of the South African Navy arrested in Cape Town after several cyclists and a jogger were whipped with a sjambok on Saturday have swapped their rooms at the barracks for a cell in Pollsmoor Prison. Johannes Horn, 24, and Musa Kheswa, 26, appeared in the Simon's Town Magistrate's Court yesterday on seven charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. They were remanded in custody until tomorrow, when they are expected to apply for bail.State prosecutor Dálin Büchner said the pair were identified by one of their victims. She said the seven attacks each took place in a different location, spread over several kilometres on a road popular with cyclists and joggers. While in the dock, the two heard the navy had told the police they were no longer welcome at the barracks.Büchner opposed bail on the grounds that the accused could not provide fixed addresses. Despite the accused's family members offering to accommodate them, magistrate Crystal McKenna postponed the case to tomorrow to allow the state to verify their new addresses.SA Navy spokesman Lieutenant Obed Medupe said: "This is entirely an SAPS matter. Until the court has taken a decision or ruling, only then the navy will get involved."..
