The trial of four men accused of robbing an SABC News television crew before a live broadcast may begin this week. The trial was due to begin on Tuesday at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court but could not proceed because one of the defence lawyers‚ Howard Mabuza‚ failed to arrive in court.Mabuza's client Manuel Junior could not account for his absence. Mabuza also failed to inform other parties that he would not be available.Junior and his co-accused‚ Alfred Ndlovu‚ Clement Ncube and Motin Mortin allegedly robbed journalists Sophie Letsaba‚ Vuyo Mvoko‚ Tlhapane Monaisa‚ Tsakani Malwandla and Chriselda Lewis at gun-point in March this year‚ stealing cell phones‚ a laptop‚ a wristwatch and cash. Video footage of the robbery‚ caught by SABC cameras‚ revealed the faces of two of the robbers. The four men are also accused of a second armed robbery in February this year. Ndlovu‚ Junior and Mortin face charges of possession of property suspected to be stolen.Prosecutor Pearl Pillay said the state was ready to proceed with the trial‚ and its witnesses were before the court. The only hold-up was Mabuza's absence.Magistrate Bennita Oswell said that it was unacceptable that he had not excused himself from the court.“I don't appreciate getting third-hand messages from the prosecutor of [another] court [as to Mabuza's whereabouts]‚” she said.Pillay said despite numerous attempts‚ Mabuza could not be reached by telephone. The case returns to court on Wednesday...
