Wingers fly the cash-strapped Kings coop

Beleaguered Eastern Province Kings have lost two more players, wingers Luther Obi and Sylvian Mahuza, as a result of their failure to pay players' salaries. The union confirmed yesterday that the duo had given notice of their departure.The Times understands that most of the remaining players are waiting to look at the veracity of the new nine-figure sponsorship deal that president Cheeky Watson is allegedly bringing from Australia before making decisions.Tim Whitehead, Tim Agaba and Lizo Gqoboka, the latter to the Blue Bulls, have already confirmed their moves away from Port Elizabeth.The union's financial woes have reached crisis levels - just three months before their re-entry into the expanded 18-team Super Rugby competition. Kings' players, staff and management have not been paid their October salaries, but Watson has promised a fresh R200-million sponsorship deal."We've been waiting on Cheeky, who told us he'd be back in the country yesterday," said a source close to the players."But he has yet to bring anything formal as to what is going on. Even if the players are desperate to leave, there isn't a lot in terms of options coming to the wider group of players. The players also have one eye on next year's Super rugby. Formal approaches from other unions have been limited."Watson has scheduled a press conference for today to reveal details of the sponsorship...
