A win, not a triumph for Bafana

19 November 2015 - 02:15 By Khanyiso Tshwaku

The turning point of Tuesday's Fifa 2018 World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Angola came in the 60th minute when Thulani Serero was brought in to replace the hardworking but ineffectual Mpho Makola. After an hour of huffing and puffing at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night, Bafana suddenly found the edge they needed to make the Angolan defence panic.Seven minutes later, Angola's Manucho Diniz scored an own goal, enabling Bafana Bafana to extend their 3-1 first leg win in Benguela to 4-1 in the decider.Serero - who was inexplicably left out of the 23-man squad that did duty at the African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea at the beginning of the year - added the aggression and sense of purpose Bafana needed. The win over Angola means that Bafana Bafana will now proceed to the African group stages of the World Cup qualifiers. But the game, while a win, once again highlights Bafana's curious difficulty competing on home soil. The team is also at the bottom of Group M in their 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. They only have one point from two games, even though coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba insists success will come.It is a tough ask as Bafana must beat Cameroon both home and away - and score maximum points in their fixtures against Mauritania and the Gambia.Mashaba is unlikely to attain that goal unless he consistently fields his best midfield combination. While Serero proved himself a vital force, the rest of his teammates were less convincing.Dean Furman did a fair job in the midfield but he did not demonstrate the flair and crisp passing that Andile Jali routinely does.Bongani Zungu and Kamohelo Mokotjo also disappointed in the midfield . They just do not look like they can stand shoulder to shoulder with the continent's best as yet.Mashaba also needs to find a way to incorporate the mercurial Sibusiso Vilakazi.Where Bafana did show promise was in the second half when the midfield held together and put a great deal of pressure on Angola.Mashaba is not known as a risk-taker but he seems to be playing a little fast and loose with his midfield selection. It is a part of the Bafana game that needs to be tightened up.Bafana will be back in Durban in March.Hopefully by that time Mashaba will have created a team that is solid throughout...
