Two people were killed and eight others injured when a bus landed on top of a car in Newcastle on Thursday.

EMS spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie, said the accident occurred on the Madadeni/Osizweni road in the Amajuba district.

"Eight people, who were occupants of the bus, have been treated for injuries sustained during the crash. Four of the patients were in a serious condition, while four patients had sustained minor injuries.

"They were stabilised and transported to local hospitals for continued medical care. All of the victims were stabilised on the scene and taken to local hospitals for further treatment," he said.

Mckenzie said the bus came to rest on top of the car and that paramedics and rescue crews had to lift the bus to gain access to the car.

"Sadly two people, who were occupants of the car, passed away at the scene - a man aged about 60 years old and a child estimated to be [between] 6 and 8 years old," he said.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
