40 passengers escape Maritzburg bus inferno

At least 40 passengers were lucky to escape from a burning bus on Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, paramedics said.

It was not clear what caused the bus to catch alight, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

"It is understood that the occupants of the bus managed to get out in time before it was fully engulfed in flames," she said.

Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire.

Three people were assessed by paramedics on the scene, but they refused hospital treatment. They had minor injuries.
