A crime-fighting team has been set up in KwaZulu-Natal to tackle a syndicate that allegedly hijacks vehicles and moves them over the Mozambique border.
Provincial Premier Senzo Mchunu assembled the team of government, police and local leaders on Saturday.
His spokesperson Sibusiso Magwaza said they wanted to restore hope to residents and businesses in the hotspot area of Makhasa, as well as those who lived along the border.
“The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that thieves just knock on the door where a car is parked and demand the keys.”
Vans and 4x4 vehicles were targeted most often.
Magwaza said the SA Police Service committed to increasing intelligence and surveillance in the area.
He said a number of proposals to resolve the situation were made in consultation with traditional leaders and the community policing forum.
“There will be a follow up meeting soon, but the community is very happy about this first major step taken by the premier.”
