House Rules: Chandler's curious kingdom

05 January 2016 - 02:32 By Robyn Alexander

Looking for a genuinely unique shopping-and-art spot? Take a stroll up Church Street in the Cape Town CBD and keep an eye out for a narrow, unassuming doorway that's delicately framed by a thriving jasmine plant. Once you've admired the small sign saying "Chandler House" in a quirky, looping script (it's Michael Chandler's own), ring the buzzer and step inside. What you'll find is a life-sized cabinet of curiosities - one of store owner and gallerist Chandler's favourite forms of display. There are three interleading rooms - this is one of those inner-city spaces that must once have been a family home - with the one on the front right-hand side containing the appropriately named Voorkamer Gallery.Currently on display there is an exuberant showcase of contemporary South African art entitled Pink: A Rosy Summer Group Show.Chandler's interest is in the decorative arts of the Cape - and the stories woven through the furniture, decor, art and collectables that make them up .Fascinated by ''the visual history of the domestic interior of the Cape" since he was an art history student at the University of Cape Town, Chandler subsequently refined his already sophisticated eye for beautiful furniture, objects and art by working at a couple of local auction houses. He always made things (think elegant blue-and-white porcelain chargers and sets of plaster books) and sourced and created items for decorators, and soon decided that he would be able to combine all these interests best if he had his own store. A store in which, he says, ''everything has a story".That's the perfect description of Chandler House, where you can buy special pieces ranging from antique furniture to hand-embroidered table linen, decorative plates and whimsical vases.Like most of the shows Chandler has curated, his current offering, Pink, is a pleasure - lovely to look at, insouciant in its mix of styles and artists, and hung in a fresh, irreverent way. It's also easy to shop from: on the day we were there the show had been open for less than a week and about half the works sported little red ''sold" stickers. The Voorkamer Gallery has been part of Chandler House since mid-2014.It's a sort of byproduct of the first show Chandler curated, In Good Company, which included all manner of work inspired by the Company's Gardens and ''all things Cape fauna and flora".Hung in the Irma Stern Museum in Rondebosch, it was a huge success. Chandler simply says, ''I hung things the way I wanted to see them and people really responded to that."And so the Voorkamer came into being: highlights have included Caution Wet Paint, for which eight painters were each given a blank canvas on the morning of a First Thursdays event. By that evening the resulting show was up in the gallery, wet paint and all.Chandler has plans for all sorts of similarly engaging shows for 2016, as well as some innovative ideas about expanding the offering at the store.Chandler House is a space we're going to keep watching - and we suggest you do, too.See chandlerhouse.co.za and thevoorkamergallery.com. Pink: A Rosy Summer Group Show is on till the end of this month...
