Rubicon, Tesla's local authorised reseller, said that bulk introduction of the company's products is expected next month and in April.Already the Powerwall has attracted a lot of interest, according to Greg Blandford, Rubicon's sales director thanks to Eskom's loadshedding last year. There have been more than 40000 pre-availability orders. But the home battery and power-generation systems will not come cheap.Four systems are available and the recommended retail price for the cheapest is R116000, excluding installation. The most expensive model goes for R272000.Blandford said that the lithium battery technology makes the system cheaper in the long run because, unlike other batteries, it can be depleted completely and then recharged without shortening its lifespan, which is 10 years. The basic system can be installed with or without solar panels and can store 6.4kW of electricity. This is sufficient to power most homes in the evening using electricity generated by solar panels in the day.Running off solar energy, said Blandford, the system could reduce an Eskom bill and even bring it close to zero.In future, electricity could be sold to the national grid, as is done in many other countries. The largest model is the RUB-TES 5.2, which operates with two Powerwall lithium batteries. The systems will be sold through Tesla-approved installers. The first batch of installers will be attending a training session in Cape Town on February 26.Johannesburg installers will get training on March 3.South Africa is the fourth country to sell the Powerwall, after the US, Germany and Australia. It is the same battery that is used in Tesla electric cars...
