US chickens cross SA road

The first 16000t of chicken imported from the US is already on supermarket shelves, the Department of Trade and Industry has said. The arrival of the bone-in portions on Friday, as part of an annual total of 65000t from the US, means South Africa can benefit from the benefits of the US's African Growth and Opportunity Act for the next nine years with no restrictions.South Africa at one point looked likely to lose some of the benefits of the trade agreement, in particular those related to agricultural products, after the two countries butted heads over imports of meat products, including chicken, beef and pork. But Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies said yesterday that he had received an e-mail on Wednesday from the US trade representative in South Africa stating that "based on the actions taken, I will be sending a recommendation today to the president to revoke the suspension of Agoa benefits to South Africa".He said the revocation might take a few weeks to come into effect. There had been opposition to imports of chicken from the US. Local chicken producers said the imports would depress their businesses and there have been concerns about quality.Earlier this week, the SA Poultry Association told parliament that the chicken was surplus to the US market and was being "dumped" on South Africa.Although the meat, mostly chicken wings and legs, was of a comparable nutritional quality to that produced in this country, local producers said it was old.Davies said that people buying chicken in a supermarket would be able to see the country of origin on the labelling. He said South Africa imported poultry from other countries and the US chicken would merely add to the mix.Davies said the Department of Trade and Industry had launched an "eat well, eat safe, eat local" campaign aimed at promoting local foods, and there was "no problem whatsoever" with South African chicken producers labelling their product as local or "proudly South African"...
