Yach makes waves for the 100th time

It used to be considered madness - a swim from Robben Island to the mainland in only a swimming cap and a Speedo.Yesterday, open-water swimmer Theodore Yach did it for the 100th time. The centenary swim and fund-raising event was yet another milestone in an impressive swimming career spanning much of the world. And yet Yach says he still has doubts before each crossing.Said Yach: "At the core, the reason for me doing the swims hasn't really changed - it's me saying to myself: 'Can I do this thing?'"His doubts related to the cold water and strong currents, with yesterday's temperature of 12C considered a bit nippy. However, Yach had just a mild shiver as he climbed out at Three Anchor Bay after three hours and 10 minutes.Now 58, Yach says he is getting quicker, buoyed by dietary advice from celebrity sports scientist Tim Noakes." There's no question that what goes in the mouth has a huge effect on one's performance," he said.Yach met his wife shortly before attempting his first crossing. He concedes it took her a while to get used to the idea: "Only about 15 years into my marriage did she confess that she had told her friends: 'You know I'm not sure about this Yach boy - I think he is delusional'.""I think I'm fortunate," he said...
