Man caught with 36 Sassa cards to face fraud charge

Police seized 36 pension cards and an undisclosed sum of money from a 25-year-old man during a sting operation in Durban. Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela said the Umlazi K9 Unit received information about "fraudulent activities" at a service station in Amanzimtoti‚ south of the city.The team found the man at an ATM‚ withdrawing cash‚ on Wednesday. He had 36 South African Social Secuirty Agency (Sassa) cards in his possession‚ with pin codes written on them.He was arrested and detained at Amanzimtoti police station.Cops observed taking R5,000 bribe from suspect: HawksMagudulela said the man is facing charges of fraud and contravening the Electronic Communication and Transaction Act.He is expected to appear in court soon.Acting provincial commissioner Major-General Bhekinkosi Langa said: “The investigation will continue to establish if he is not linked to other crimes where Sassa cards were used. The police will also establish as to where and how the suspect got these Sassa cards.”.The Hawks arrested 15 people across the country last week who had allegedly stolen more than R2.3-million involving 400 social security grants.The syndicate falls under a broader criminal investigation involving fraudulent social grants of more than R34.7-million‚ reported The Times. ..
