Abandoned toddler found dead in bushes near river

Abukhanyisile Sitebisa‚ the 18-month-old Stutterheim boy who was abandoned near a river by his grandmother last week because his mother was not looking after him‚ has been discovered dead.Stutterheim police said the toddler's body was found on Tuesday afternoon in the bushes near the river at Mbulelo location.A villager who had visited the bushes to relieve himself had spotted the body. He ran to a village road where he stopped motorists to report the discovery. Police were called to the scene.Police said his body was starting to decompose. He was found at the exact same spot where members of the East London K9 search and rescue unit had searched with their dogs to no avail.A post mortem to determine the cause of death will be performed on Thursday.Police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said Abukhanyisile was abandoned in the bushes on Sunday June 26‚ allegedly by his 42-year-old grandmother Xoliswa Sitebisa."It is alleged that she abandoned her grandchild after the mother was not looking after him. The matter was reported to police the following Tuesday. We immediately went to look for the boy without success. The grandmother was arrested and charged with child abandonment‚" Mawisa said.She will make her second court appearance at the Stutterheim Magistrate's Court on July 19 for a formal bail application.
