Suspected robber killed‚ biker injured in shootout on William Nicol

A motorcyclist is fighting for his life after being injured during a shootout at the corner of Johannesburg's William Nicol and Republic roads‚ in which a suspected robber was shot dead on Thursday‚ according to paramedics and a witness. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tsekiso Mofokeng told TMG Digital that the police were following up on information they had received about a suspected stolen vehicle. They spotted a vehicle that fitted the description they had been given.“The suspects realised that the police were following them and sped off. The vehicle lost control and collided with two other cars and a motorcycle and it overturned.“The suspects got out of the car and fired shots at the police. The police retaliated.”He confirmed that one suspect had died‚ two suspects were arrested and another fled the scene. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and are investigating whether the vehicle the suspects were driving was stolen‚ said Mofokeng.Providing more detail on the shootout as well as the injured‚ Emer-G-Med spokesperson Maxwell Cohen said: “A shootout between the suspects and police ensued. One suspect was shot dead; two others were critically injured while the fourth sustained moderate injuries".“The injured suspects were all transported to state facilities under police guard." Paramedics also treated the injured bystanders on the scene.“The motorcyclist was in a critical condition and required immediate Advanced Life Support care. The biker was intubated and placed on a ventilator before being airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital for urgent specialist care‚" Cohen said."A second civilian sustained moderate injuries and was also transported to hospital for further care."The shootout occurred near a busy Pick n Pay.A witness to the drama‚ Sebastian Desemberg‚ wrote on his Facebook wall: "In a little shock. Four guys in what was most likely to be a hijacked car took out a motorcycle before turning on its roof right opposite my car"."I saw three men in a hurry to get out of the car as if it was going to blow up and start running away. Before I could register (what was happening)‚ a few armed men that were obviously chasing them started firing at them with automatic weapons and hand guns. I got the f*#k out of the there."The motorcyclist helmet flew off his head and I doubt he will make it. He was collateral to what was going on‚" Desemberg said.Supplied ..
