Petrol pumps running dry

Fuel shortages have been reported at petrol stations across the country - making nonsense of the assurances of industry spokesmen last week that motorists had nothing to worry about unless the strike were prolonged. The strike by refinery workers is now in its fifth day.The workers started their strike on Thursday, demanding a 9% wages increase."Refinery operations are continuing and we are doing as much as is reasonably possible to maintain the supply of fuel to our network of Caltex stations," said Chevron SA spokesman Suzanne Pullinger.Don’t panic‚ stick to your refilling routine‚ says petrol associationThe SA Petroleum Industry Association (Saipa) has advised motorists to keep to their normal refuelling patterns despite some filling stations having already running out of petrol.Sasol spokesman Alex Anderson said contingency plans were in place "to ensure the minimum disruption to our customers".Twitter users vented: "Feeling the impact of the #fuel workers' #strike in Pta.
