Food Review: Fusion, fashion and fission

17 August 2016 - 10:26 By SJ Needham

Innocuously nestled in a narrow slot in Greenside lies Momo Baohaus, a stylish new Asian fusion restaurant fired with as much heat as your taste buds can take. We started with perfectly seasoned salmon ceviche in delicate mini-tacos on black slates, with dollops of sauce that begged to be mopped up.The twice-cooked beef ribs with toasted sesame and spring onion melted in the mouth. The prawn wonton with pickled shiitake, ginger, crushed chilli and tingly Szechuan peppercorn oil was full of flavour, but so hot it could power a nuclear reactor. If you're a fan, look out for the chilli picture next to items on the menu and up the ante.Totally satisfied with our moreish starters we waited, mouths watering, for our main courses. Food is fast here and served by charming, smiling staff in preppy tartan shirts. Our baos (steamed buns) were served in bamboo steamers and we popped them onto our midnight blue, heavy ceramic plates (another attention to detail is this beautiful crockery). The winner was the Chairman Bao, an intoxicating mix of pulled lamb, hoisin, pickled shiitake, QP mayonnaise, spring onion, coriander, toasted sesame, crushed peanuts, fried onion, cucumber and greens.Vegans are spoilt for choice, from tofu steaks in a bao to kimchi and tofu gyoza (pot-stickers), or make your own bowl filled with peanuts, bok choy and noodles.Booking is advisable.NEED TO KNOW:What to try? Salmon Ceviche Taco or a delicious, healthy bowl. What to drink? Bring your own booze, they aren't licensed yet, but corkage will always be free.Avoid the? Szechuan Peppercorn oil if you don't fancy hot food. How much do I need? About R110 to R150 a person.Where? 139 Greenway, Greenside, 010-900-4889 ALSO IN THE AREA:POP CHAMPAGNEPOP champagne bar has opened in Greenside, close to the popular Momo Baohaus. It has charming gold swings outside, for quaffing champagne on a carefree summer's day. They offer a full range of local MCC (méthode cap classique) sparkling wines, proseccos and champagne by the glass. Buy full bottles, too, if you're so inclined. Because champagnes go well with raw food they serve oysters, raw salmon, tuna, trout and beef fillet tartare. They have simple, yet pricey snacks such as biltong dusted in cajun, coriander or lemon pepper. 137 Greenway, Greenside, 083-645-0505DOWNSTAIRS @ TRIODown a staircase, past some gleaming metal dogs, into a courtyard of aloes. Sigh, relax. The drinks are amusing twists on old classics and the food is from the new menu at the upstairs Trio restaurant. Thursdays are courtyard sessions for live acts. 116 Greenway, Greenside, 011-028-1404. - SJ Needham and Andrea Nagel..
