Sanef slams police action against UJ student journalist

The harassment of a University of Johannesburg student journalist‚ whose equipment was confiscated by police in the dead of night‚ has been condemned by the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef). Magnificent Ndebele‚ 20‚ witnessed a confrontation between students and alleged private security officials earlier this month where another student‚ Kelvin Baloyi‚ was shot at point-blank range and died on the scene.Ndebele‚ a second year student‚ took pictures during the altercation.He was visited by two police officers between 1am and 2am on Thursday at his university residence. His cellphone and laptop were confiscated without any warrant.Police accused him of inciting violence and interfering with their investigation. They also warned him that his movements were being watched.Sanef recently met acting national police commissioner Lieutenant General Johannes Khomotso Phahlane to discuss its concerns about hostility and unlawful actions by police officers.“It remains a deep concern that many police officers act in a manner that is contrary to the country’s laws and Constitution‚” said Sanef on Friday...
