Strong winds have scuppered the search for a bather who went missing after jumping from the Bay of Plenty pier in Durban on Tuesday night.

Police Search and Rescue divers had initially responded to the pier after the 23-year-old swimmer had disappeared underwater.

It is understood that he had been swimming with a group of friends when he got into difficulty.

The search for the man resumed at first light but gale winds and rough surf conditions placed divers in jeopardy.

He is missing and presumed drowned. The search for his body will continue on Thursday.
